Technology has been great help to people. It helps us to organize ourselves & provides second brain. By setting alarms & reminders we can release constant thoughts the when & where many tasks. There is however price that we pay for these advantages.
A common scenario is one I will describe for you. You?ve decided to do some work on the computer today. The computer needs to be started but you don?t want to get out the chair. You squat down bend forward & twist enough to reach the on switch on the tower. This movement can put the low back discs at their weakest & most vulnerable point. Think about the stress if you do this movement often on the low back area.
Okay so you are ready to open your document & start typing. Majority people look at the keyboard when they are typing. This position bends your neck & head forward. This direction is the opposite what your neck cure is designed to be in. Then something that I call ?the black hole? develops.
People actually look like they are getting sucked into the computer screen after short time working. Shoulders begin to slump forward the head moves forward towards the screen. Did you know that for every inch that your head moves forward there is 25 pounds additional stress placed on the neck & spine.
You might be this position for hours thus increasing the stress on your body. In addition to this most people who use computers will do this on regular basis. Let?s add the motion the chair. Most office chairs have wheels translation people are not getting out the chair & they will bend & twist to get to what they need.
The printer is often positioned to the side so the user will just rotate the chair to the side & reach. Again this is places the stress on the low back. When going from sitting to standing the computer user will rotate the chair & step out instead backing the chair out & standing straight up. Does this scenario sound familiar to you? There are some things that you can do to reduce the stress on your body while using the computer.
First look at your workstation. The monitor should be at eye level & directly front the keyboard. Rotate the position your printer periodically if you can. A great alternative to rolling your chair is to back your chair out from desk & stand up straight. Just performing this task will eliminate lot stress on your body.
Be observant your elbow & hand position. Its best to use chair with no armrests. This will actually allow you let your shoulders relax instead being push up. A good hand rest for your wrists is great idea. Just make sure that your forearms parallel with the floor. It is also important that your thighs be parallel with the floor when adjusting the height the chair.
Remember to stand & stretch every 30 minutes or so if you can. Getting out the chair & stretching or walking around will allow your body some extension time. Computer work is being forward we call this flexion. If you stand you are extending your body & releasing some tension.
